In order to get a driver’s license in New York, you must be at least 16 years old and need to pass a written exam, finish a 5-hour pre-licensing course, and pass a road test. The only people who may apply for a New York State EDL are US citizens who reside in New York. However, a Government REAL ID compatible Enhanced Driver License, permit, or non-driver ID is acceptable to board a domestic flight (inside the US), enter military bases, and access some federal institutions. Unless you become a New York resident, you do not need to apply for a driver’s license there. With a valid driver’s license from another nation, you are permitted to drive in New York State. New York State DL are only required for New York residents. Since it is an essential government authorization, it is illegal to drive without one. If you have a New York driver’s license, you can legally drive your vehicle on the road.
